How should decisions be shared in a couple?

Why would the man of the house share control of the finances when he is the one making the most money?

Of course, she needs to know how I manage the money, so sometimes we plan together

Only when she really asks to give her input and I can't avoid it, do I share information with her

How do you manage the inevitable fights in a couple?

Always avoiding confrontation is not healthy; I prefer to discuss what is hurting us

I always prefer to avoid any confrontation, by walking away or keeping silent

I generally prefer to keep the peace at home by avoiding conflict, but sometimes I do respond to her questions

What do you do with family secrets or past history?

I repress a lot of anger and shame from my past, so that I can function as a grown-up now

I know that whatever happened to me in the past, if my family knew, they would support and accept me

I need to bury the terrible things that happened to me because, if my family knew, they would reject me

How do you handle negative feedback?

I have to accept that people could be frustrated by my behavior, so I need to be consistent as not to disappoint them more

Imagining how I could make them look bad later makes me feel powerful and in control again

When people criticize me, I find revenge by agreeing and looking positive, but never following through

How do you manage other people's expectations about you?

I don't feel obligated to respond to anybody's expectations; I'll do things my way

If people have expectations about me that I can't fulfill, I clarify what I can and can't do

I can go along, be reasonable sometimes, and then deliver what it easiest for me

How do you deal with your emotions, such as anger?

I recognize when things make me angry, and try to find a solution that is more acceptable and peaceful for me

Sometimes I'm walking around full of anger because people are irritating me, attacking me for things I didn't do, or misunderstanding me completely

If I see my anger is not proportional to what actually happened, I wonder about my reaction and where it came from

How concerned are you with pleasing other people?

I always try to be seen as easy-going and nice, so I always say yes to what people ask from me and then I do what I want

It saddens me to see that I don't know how to connect with others, so I'm forced to feign interest and go along

If I go along without meaning it, and people expect certain behaviors which I don't deliver, I'm worried about them being upset with me

When you express your anger, what is the impact on others?

When I have an anger attack and use strong words or violence against a loved one, I never can go back and apologize

It's difficult sometimes to control my emotions. When I let anger show up, sadly, others can get scared of me

People are always talking about me showing more emotion, but then, when I get really angry they protest and get scared of me

How do you balance logic vs. emotion?

I see myself as a good, rational person because I know how to avoid any emotional talk completely

I prefer to be logically-oriented, but others see me as too detached and indifferent to their situations

I like to connect with others on all levels, rational as well as emotional

How similar or different are you from the way you were as a kid?

Whatever happened to that child, I have completely forgotten it, so I don't need to keep looking back

My past story and inner child have a lot of influence on the way I am today

Some aspects of my life are best left in the past, even when they have something to do with the person I am now

What is your outlook on the way your parents raised you?

Growing up, you have to accept that your parents did the best they could when raising you

They are the ones who taught me to be the way I am now. I have to live with my resentment and anger, and push it to the back of my mind in order to go on

Some people say they learned to forget their parents' past neglect. But, those memories are still fresh in my mind sometimes

How much do you rely on yourself, and how often do you ask for help?

Usually I prefer to be self-sufficient, and don't expect others to help me, because then they could frustrate or control me

Nobody recognizes my real needs or really understands me, so I have to act as if I never need anything from anybody

It's normal to ask for people's help, if and when you need it; we need to help each other

How do you view sharing and intimacy with your partner?

In an intimate relationship, some vulnerability is part of the deal, and I accept it

I'm vulnerable to her rejection and criticism if I open up, it's better to keep my privacy and distance

I know that I have to share my thoughts honestly with my loved one; sometimes, simply, I can't

What issues are you comfortable talking about with people in general?

It's best to talk about neutral issues like the weather than to enter into silly confrontations or heated issues like politics or religion

I'm able to confront all kinds of issues, even facing negative emotions while processing these issues

I like to keep the peace; I like to talk about the positive things and not the negative things whenever possible

How willing are you to compromise in issues that affect both you and your spouse?

I prefer to decide by myself first what I want to do, and then the other person can do what they want

I accept that to keep the relationship healthy, I have to negotiate and share issues with her

I save time by offering her my own opinion first

How much emotion are you willing to show in front of others?

Emotions are messy and get people in trouble; I try to show myself as clear-headed and self-controlled as much as I can

Emotions are natural, and it's right to show them when adequate; I'm proud that I am open to myself and others

It's disgusting to see people showing emotions; I avoid showing mine because I don't want to be seen as weak

What role do your childhood memories play in your present life?

It is useless to dwell in childhood memories, because nothing can change what happened, so I ignore it.

As an adult, I have the power to decide each day how to live my life best, using the experiences my past. Only if I understand the thinking coming from my past, can I function better in the present.

I need to accept and understand my child's perspective, because they will keep influencing who I am today

What would your reaction be if people told you that you were passive aggressive?

I wouldn't understand why and it would upset me because nobody would want to know how I felt or why I did it, so why would they label me?

I would be offended at people intruding into my life with this silly label - what right do they have to do that?

If this happened to me, I would be concerned, and I would ask my wife if she agree with that first
